Celebrate Pride with State College Area Roller Derby

This story originally appeared in the Centre County Gazette.

The State College Area Roller Derby is hosting its annual Pride Bout on Sunday, June 9, at the C3 Sports Arena in State College. To celebrate Pride Month, the afternoon will be full of roller derby action and community spirit, with funds from the event benefitting Centre LGBT+.

“We are incredibly excited for this year’s Pride Bout,” SCAR Vice President Tiffany “Chem” Kasper said in a press release. “It’s a fantastic opportunity for the community to come together, celebrate diversity and support the vital work of Centre LGBT+. We look forward to seeing everyone decked out in Pride colors and enjoying an exhilarating day of roller derby.”

The Pride Bout will showcase SCAR’s athletes with some friendly competition in an intraleague mixer. Guests are encouraged to come decked out in their Pride gear to cheer on SCAR’s talented members and support the cause.

Tickets for this year’s Pride Bout are $10, and free for children under 10. Tickets can be bought at the door, or ahead of time through zeffy.com. The Pride Bout will kick off at 3 p.m., but doors will open to the public at 2:30 p.m.

SCAR Derby is a flat-track derby league founded in 2010. Women-operated and skater-owned, SCAR is run by volunteers including the athletes, referees and officials.

As a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, SCAR is funded through its league dues, ticket sales, sponsorships, ad sales, skating clinic fees and donations.

“Together, we form a strong community of athleticism, healthy competition and fellowship,” shared the SCAR press release.

The organization is made up of people throughout the Centre Region with an array of ages and lifestyles. As of 2015, SCAR Derby became a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, where the group now competes for international rankings among 400 member leagues across six continents.
