Penn State Creamery Revives Retired Ice Cream Flavors With ‘Throwback Scoops’ Program

A retired flavor is returning to the scoop line this week as Berkey Creamery launches a new program aimed at bringing some of its former favorites back to Penn State.

The Creamery’s new “Throwback Scoops” program began Monday with the return of Golden Chocolate Pecan, a flavor that was last served in 2017. More retired flavors are expected to return throughout the year as part of the limited-run program.

Golden Chocolate Pecan combines chocolate ice cream with pecan halves and a salty caramel swirl. It will be available only at the Creamery in cones or bowls while supplies last.

The returning flair will not be sold in packaged containers or through the Creamery’s online store. Once the current batch is gone, another retired flavor will take its place.

“These throwback flavors are a one-time limited production run,” Doug Thomas, the Creamery’s operations manager, said. “Our hope is to continue reviving old flavors throughout the year. Be sure to visit the Creamery to find out about the latest throwback flavor on the menu.”

The program launched as Penn State began its annual Homecoming Week, which runs Sept. 20-27 this year. The Creamery is among the university’s longstanding traditions, dating to 1865, just 10 years after Penn State was founded.

“The tradition of the Creamery is an iconic part of Penn State, and we’re excited to bring retired flavor favorites back for an encore,” Thomas said. “There’s a nostalgia associated with our products, and we look forward to bringing a familiar taste back to life.”

The Berkey Creamery, part of Penn State’s College of Agricultural Sciences, produces ice cream along with milk, cheese, yogurt and sour cream. It also produces other beverages including juices, lemonade and iced teas for the university community.

For those hoping to try Golden Chocolate Pecan, the first Throwback Scoops flavor are available beginning Monday and only while the limited supply lasts.
