Centre County Adds 1 COVID-19 Death, 39 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 2,481 New Positives

Centre County registered one new COVID-19 death and 39 more cases of the virus on Tuesday, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The death is the county’s 333rd attributed to the virus since March 2020 and 12th reported this month. The new cases bring the county’s total to 34,302 (30,507 confirmed and 3,795 probable).

Centre County’s seven-day moving average for new cases is 54, down from 74 a week ago and 134 two weeks ago.

Pennsylvania reported fewer than 2,500 new positives for the third consecutive day. The 2,481 new cases bring the statewide total to 2,729,277.

The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 3,695, down from 5,129 a week ago and 10,639 two weeks ago.

With 177 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 42,424.

Hospitalizations

Mount Nittany Medical Center has 24 COVID-19 inpatients, unchanged from Monday. None are in intensive care or on ventilators. Hospitalizations have decreased by 44% in the last week.

The patients range in age from 49 to 100, according to Mount Nittany’s COVID-19 inpatient dashboard. Eleven are fully vaccinated and 13 are not vaccinated.

Statewide, COVID-19 hospitalizations are at their lowest level since Nov. 7. According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 2,517 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Pennsylvania, 113 fewer than on Monday, with 428 patients in intensive care [-30] and 265 on ventilators [-15].

Nursing and personal care home cases

Long-term care facilities in Centre County reported one new COVID-19 case among residents. A total of 20 nursing and personal care homes in the county have had a combined 769 resident cases, 741 employee cases and 182 resident deaths.

Prison cases

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Benner state prison has 13 active COVID-19 cases among inmates, eight fewer than were listed on Monday, and 10 among staff [-2].

Rockview state prison has two active inmate cases [-6] and four among staff [-2].

Both facilities are in Benner Township.

At Benner, 1,470 inmates are fully vaccinated, 17 are partially vaccinated and 190 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 311 are fully vaccinated [+1] and 317 are not vaccinated [-1].

Rockview has 1,709 inmates who are fully vaccinated and 62 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 346 are fully vaccinated and 371 are not vaccinated.

Transmission level

Centre County remains at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update.

Statewide, 66 of 67 counties are at the high level, with Sullivan County listed as moderate, the second lowest level on the CDC scale.

Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.

Vaccinations

As of Tuesday morning, 93,679 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 32 since Monday, and 14,004 are partially covered [-6]. Booster doses have been administered to 47,997 county residents [+41].

Among the county’s entire population, 69% have received at least one dose, 58.7% are fully vaccinated and 50.1% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 74.3% have received at least one dose, 62.9% are fully vaccinated and 52.7% have received a booster.

Statewide, 76.1% of adults and 66.5% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in Medicine, Mount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.

All individuals age 12 and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
