Centre County Adds 2 COVID-19 Deaths, 54 Cases

Centre County registered two new COVID-19 deaths and 54 more cases of the virus on Thursday, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

The county has had 253 deaths attributed to COVID-19 since the start of the pandemic, including nine reported this month.

The new cases bring the county’s total to 21,928 (19,745 confirmed and 2,183 probable).

Pennsylvania reported 6,637 new positives to increase the statewide total to 1,666,724.

With 96 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 32,729.

The county also had 64 new negative test results, bringing its total of 83,836. Statewide, there were 7,208 negatives for a total of 5,836,528.

Hospitalizations

Mount Nittany Medical Center is treating 36 COVID-19 inpatients, one more than on Wednesday, with three in intensive care [-1] and three on ventilators [+1].

The patients range in age from 47 to 87, according to Mount Nittany’s COVID-19 inpatient dashboard. Twelve are fully vaccinated and 24 are not vaccinated

Pennsylvania has 3,032 COVID-19 inpatients, an increase of 16 since Wednesday, with 679 in intensive care [+22] and 384 on ventilators [+25], according to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard. Statewide COVID-19 hospitalizations are at their highest level in four weeks.

An estimated 92% of COVID-19 patients in the state have recovered, according to a DOH calculation that considers a case as recovered if it has not been reported as a death and it is more than 30 days past the date of the first positive test or onset of symptoms.

Prison cases

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Benner state prison has 54 active COVID-19 cases among inmates — currently the most of any state correctional institute and nearly three times more than the second highest — and seven among staff. Rockview state prison has one active inmate case and seven among staff. Both facilities are in Benner Township.

At Benner, 1,575 inmates are fully vaccinated, 14 are partially vaccinated and 198 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 276 are fully vaccinated and 352 are not vaccinated.

Rockview has 1,655 inmates who are fully vaccinated and 60 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 325 are fully vaccinated and 392 are not vaccinated.

Transmission level

Centre County remains at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update on Wednesday.

Among Pennsylvania 67 counties, all but one are at the high level. Philadelphia is at the substantial level, the second highest on the CDC scale.

Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.

Vaccinations

As of Thursday morning, 85,849 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated [+101 since Wednesday] and 10,380 are partially covered [+143]. Third doses have been administered to 18,515 county residents [+871].

Among the county’s entire population, 70.4% have received at least one dose and 55.7% are fully vaccinated, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 77.1% have received at least one dose and 62% are fully vaccinated.

Statewide, 73.3% of adults and 61.8% of the total population are fully vaccinated. Pennsylvania is fifth in the nation for total doses administered, according the CDC.
