Centre County Adds 23 COVID-19 Cases; Hospitalizations Continue to Fall

Centre County recorded 23 new COVID-19 cases on Monday, marking its smallest increase since Dec. 27, according to Pennsylvania Department of Health data.

The new cases bring the county’s total to 34,263 (30,480 confirmed and 3,783 probable). Centre County’s seven-day moving average for new cases is 38, down from 93 a week ago and 153 two weeks ago.

Pennsylvania reported fewer than 2,000 new positives for the first time since late August. The 1,994 new cases bring the statewide total to 2,726,796.

The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 2,701, down from 6,630 a week ago and 11,378 two weeks ago.

Hospitalizations

Mount Nittany Medical Center has 24 COVID-19 inpatients, five fewer than on Sunday and 19 fewer than one week ago. None are in intensive care or on ventilators.

The patients range in age from 49 to 100, according to Mount Nittany’s COVID-19 inpatient dashboard. Twelve are fully vaccinated and 12 are not vaccinated.

Statewide, COVID-19 hospitalizations are at their lowest level since Nov. 14. According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 2,630 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Pennsylvania, 60 fewer than on Sunday, with 458 patients in intensive care [-2] and 280 on ventilators [-15].

Deaths

DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents, keeping the total at 332.

With 44 new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 42,247.

Nursing and personal care home cases

Long-term care facilities in Centre County reported six new COVID-19 cases among residents and three among employees. A total of 20 nursing and personal care homes in the county have had a combined 768 resident cases, 741 employee cases and 182 resident deaths.

Prison cases

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Benner state prison has 21 active COVID-19 cases among inmates and 12 among staff.

Rockview state prison has eight active inmate cases and six among staff.

Both facilities are in Benner Township.

At Benner, 1,470 inmates are fully vaccinated, 17 are partially vaccinated and 190 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 310 are fully vaccinated and 318 are not vaccinated.

Rockview has 1,713 inmates who are fully vaccinated and 61 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 346 are fully vaccinated and 371 are not vaccinated.

Transmission level

Centre County remains at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update.

Statewide, 66 of 67 counties are at the high level, with Sullivan County listed as moderate, the second lowest level on the CDC scale, as of Monday.

Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.

Vaccinations

As of Monday morning, 93,647 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 17 since Sunday, and 14,010 are partially covered [+7]. Booster doses have been administered to 47,956 county residents [+14].

Among the county’s entire population, 69% have received at least one dose, 58.7% are fully vaccinated and 50.1% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 74.3% have received at least one dose, 62.9% are fully vaccinated and 52.7% have received a booster.

Statewide, 76.1% of adults and 66.5% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in MedicineMount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.

All individuals age 12 and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
