Centre County Adds 30 COVID-19 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 2,407 New Positives

Centre County recorded 30 new COVID-19 cases on Sunday as new infections and hospitalizations continued to fall locally and statewide.

The new positives bring the county’s total to 34,240 (30,461 confirmed and 3,779 probable). Centre County’s seven-day average for new cases is 54, down from 84 a week ago and 158 two weeks ago.

Pennsylvania reported 2,407 new cases to bring the statewide total to 2,724,802.

The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 3,538, down from 6,207 a week ago and 12,012 two weeks ago.

Hospitalizations

According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, 30 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Centre County, three fewer than on Saturday, with none in intensive care or on ventilators.

Statewide, COVID-19 hospitalizations dropped to their lowest level since Nov. 14. According to the DOH dashboard, 2,690 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Pennsylvania, 83 fewer than on Saturday, with 460 patients in intensive care [+5] and 295 on ventilators [-10].

Deaths

DOH did not update COVID-19 death data on Sunday. As of Saturday, Centre County has had 332 deaths attributed to the virus since March 2020, while statewide Pennsylvania has 42,203.

Nursing and personal care home cases

Long-term care facilities in Centre County reported no new COVID-19 cases among residents and employees. A total of 20 nursing and personal care homes in the county have had a combined 762 resident cases, 738 employee cases and 182 resident deaths.

Prison cases

According to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections, Benner state prison has 21 active COVID-19 cases among inmates and 12 among staff.

Rockview state prison has eight active inmate cases and six among staff.

Both facilities are in Benner Township.

At Benner, 1,470 inmates are fully vaccinated, 17 are partially vaccinated and 190 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 310 are fully vaccinated and 318 are not vaccinated.

Rockview has 1,713 inmates who are fully vaccinated and 61 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 346 are fully vaccinated and 371 are not vaccinated.

Transmission level

Centre County remains at the highest level for community transmission of COVID-19 on the Centers for Disease Control scale, according to the latest county-level data update.

Statewide, 66 of 67 counties are at the high level, with Sullivan County listed as substantial, the second highest level on the CDC scale, as of Sunday.

Transmission levels are based on positivity rate and cases per 100,000 people for the previous seven days. At the substantial and high levels, CDC guidance recommends all people, regardless of vaccination status, wear masks in public indoor settings.

Vaccinations

As of Sunday morning, 93,630 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 29 since Saturday, and 14,003 are partially covered [-1]. Booster doses have been administered to 47,942 county residents [+39].

Among the county’s entire population, 68.9% have received at least one dose, 58.7% are fully vaccinated and 50.1% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 74.2% have received at least one dose, 62.9% are fully vaccinated and 52.6% have received a booster.

Statewide, 76.1% of adults and 66.5% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in Medicine, Mount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.

All individuals age 12 and older are now eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
