Centre County Adds 5 COVID-19 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 403 New Positives

Centre County registered five new COVID-19 cases on Sunday, marking its fifth single-digit increase in the last week.

The new cases bring the county’s total to 35,044 (31,122 confirmed and 3,922 probable) since March 2020, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Centre County’s seven-day moving average for new cases is eight, according to DOH, down from 12 a week ago and 25 a month ago.

Pennsylvania reported fewer than 1,000 new positives for the 16th time in 17 days. The 403 new cases bring the statewide total to 2,779,049.

The commonwealth’s seven-day average is 593, down from 712 a week ago and 1,610 a month ago.


Two COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Centre County, unchanged from Saturday, with none in intensive care or on ventilators, according to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard.

Local COVID-19 hospitalizations are at their lowest since June 2021.

Statewide, COVID-19 hospitalizations fell to their lowest level since Aug. 1. According to the Department of Health hospital preparedness dashboard, 503 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Pennsylvania, 13 fewer than on Saturday, with 75 in intensive care [-5] and 51 on ventilators.


DOH reported no new deaths attributed to the virus among Centre County residents for the 12th consecutive day, keeping the total at 345.

With one new COVID-19 deaths identified by the Pennsylvania death registry, the statewide total is now 44,209.

Prison cases

Rockview state prison has no COVID-19 cases among inmates or staff, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections.

Centre County’s other state prison, Benner, has one case among inmates and one among staff.

At Benner, 1,424 inmates are fully vaccinated, 18 are partially vaccinated and 189 are not vaccinated. Among staff, 314 are fully vaccinated and 314 are not vaccinated.

Rockview has 1,716 inmates who are fully vaccinated, three who are partially vaccinated and 87 who are not vaccinated. Among staff, 349 are fully vaccinated and 368 are not vaccinated.

Community level

Centre County remains at the “low” community level for COVID-19 for the third consecutive week, according to the Centers for Disease Control’s latest update on Thursday.

Introduced on Feb. 25, community levels measure not only new cases, but also new hospitalizations and local hospital capacity to determine mitigation guidelines. At the low level, there is no recommendation for indoor masking.

Statewide, 60 of 67 counties are at the low level, with Bradford, Montour, Northumberland, Schuylkill, Snyder, Susquehanna and Union counties at the medium level. At the medium level, the CDC recommends masks indoors in public for those at risk of severe illness. At the high level, universal indoor public masking is recommended.


As of Sunday morning, 94,696 people in Centre County are fully vaccinated, an increase of 11 since Saturday, and 14,207 are partially covered [+6]. Booster doses have been administered to 49,691 county residents [+14]

Among the county’s entire population, 69.7% have received at least one dose, 59.3% are fully vaccinated and 51.2% are fully vaccinated with a booster, according to the CDC. Among adult residents, 75.1% have received at least one dose, 63.5% are fully vaccinated and 53.8% have received a booster.

Statewide, 77% of adults and 67.5% of the total population are fully vaccinated.

Vaccination appointments are available through Centre Volunteers in MedicineMount Nittany Health and through other pharmacies and providers listed at vaccines.gov.

All individuals age 12 and older are eligible to receive a COVID-19 vaccine booster shot.
