Centre County Adds 51 COVID-19 Cases; Pennsylvania Reports 4,688

Centre County reported 51 new COVID-19 cases on Friday to bring its total to 11,622, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.

Pennsylvania added 4,688 cases, bringing the statewide total to 861,674.

The county also had 72 additional negative test results increasing its total to 57,513. Across Pennsylvania there were 7,420 new negatives for a total of 3,678,224.

DOH reported one new death attributed to the virus among Centre County residents to bring the total to 200.

With 138 new COVID-19 deaths reported on Thursday, Pennsylvania’s total is now 22,239.

Mount Nittany Medical Center is treating 23 COVID-19 patients as of Friday morning, an increase of three since Thursday. The patients range in age from 39 to 96, according to a hospital spokesperson.

Since Feb. 1, the medical center has admitted 12 COVID positive patients and has had an average census of 20 COVID positive inpatients per day.

“While hospitalizations remain high, the past several weeks have seen COVID inpatient numbers trending lower,” Chief Medical Officer Dr. Nirmal Joshi said in a statement.

According to the DOH hospital preparedness dashboard, which includes Mount Nittany Medical Center and rehabilitation hospitals, 26 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized in Centre County, including two in intensive care.

Hospitalizations across Pennsylvania continue to decline. Statewide, 3,041 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, including 644 in intensive care and 371 on ventilators.

Centre County’s PCR testing positivity rate for Jan. 29 through Feb. 4 was 13%, eighth highest in the state and up from 9% the previous seven days, according to the updated DOH early warning monitoring dashboard. Pennsylvania’s statewide PCR testing positivity rate was 8.6%, down from 9.3% the previous week.

An estimated 84% of COVID-19 patients in the state have recovered, per a health department calculation.

Through Thursday, 12,468 people in Centre County have received at least one dose of the COVID-19 vaccine, including 2,775 who are fully covered with both required doses, according to health department data.

Mount Nittany Medical Center began appointment-based vaccination clinics this week and at the end of the day on Friday will have administered 2,500 doses since Monday. Mount Nittany currently has nearly 5,000 vaccination appointments scheduled through the first week in March.

Since it began COVID-19 vaccinations in December, Mount Nittany has administered more than 7,200 doses, Joshi said.

Among Pennsylvania’s total cases, 746,838 are confirmed and 114,836 are probable. In Centre County, 10,750 are confirmed and 872 are probable.
