SCASD Briefly Extending School Days to Make Up for Snow Closures

State College Area schools will add time to each school day for the remainder of the spring to make up for snow closures, instead of extending the academic calendar in June.

Beginning Monday, March 30, five minutes will be added to every day at each district school to meet the state-mandated 180 days of instruction and keep the end of the student academic year on Friday, June 5, Superintendent Curtis Johnson wrote in a message to families on Wednesday.

For elementary schools, times will be 8:10 a.m. to 3:05 p.m. Middle schools and the high school will run from 8:40 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

“For families who have already made plans for the summer, we sought to avoid moving the last day of school into a new week,” Johnson wrote.

The last day of school will remain a half day.

SCASD has had four closures due to weather this year and does not have snow days built in to its calendar. The district also does not use flexible instruction days.

If the district had three or fewer snow, they would not have to be made up by students to fulfill the state-mandated days of instruction, only by staff through contractual Act 80 in-service days the week of June 8.
