Pennsylvania’s primary is (unofficially) in the books and it’s on to the presidential election this fall.
Local voters didn’t have much to decide in the Democratic and Republican primaries for the state General Assembly and U.S. House districts representing Centre County — all of which were uncontested — but they did get to make their nomination picks in several statewide races.
Those included Democratic and Republican nominations for attorney general and Democratic nominations for auditor general and treasurer. The presidential primaries were also contested, even if the outcomes weren’t ever in question.
Without many high-profile races to be decided, voter turnout was the lowest in a presidential-year primary in Centre County since 2012. Of the county’s 83,449 registered Democratic and Republican voters, 23,477 cast ballots, a turnout rate of 28%. The primaries in 2020 and 2016 both saw 37% turnout, while in 2012 it was 21%.
Democrats and Republicans had about equal turnout percentage-wise. Democrats saw 28.4% (12,038 of 42,366 registered voters) cast ballots, and the GOP had a turnout of 27.8% (11,439 of 41,083 registered voters).
