Penn State Athletics announced yesterday that the 11th annual Lift for Life event will take place on Friday, July 12 at 5 p.m. The date coincides with the popular Arts Festival weekend.
Last summer, Lift for Life was moved from Holuba Hall to the outdoor lacrosse field, where it will take place again this year. Lift for Life is open to the public with a small donation recommended to help the cause. Last year’s record breaking event raised more than $100,000 for the Kidney Cancer Association through the Penn State Chapter of Uplifting Athletes. The competition featured a new-look offense vs. defense format. Drills included tug-o-wars, tire pulls, carrying sandbags, and even pushing vans. You might remember last year’s event as the last public sighting of Silas Redd on campus.
The president for Penn State’s chapter of Uplifting Athletes, Eric Shrive, has raised over $100,000 throughout his first four years at Penn State. He recently won the Rare Disease Champion award, which was presented to him at the Maxwell Club. Shrive is encouraging his teammates to raise $300,000 this year to bring the total to a million dollars.
Lift for Life is associated with Uplifting Athletes, an organization which raises money to help combat rare diseases. The Penn State chapter began when Scott Shirley’s father was diagnosed with kidney cancer. Supporters have raised more than $700,000 over 11 years.
