A family of two was displaced after a fire caused damage to their home in State College on Wednesday night.
Alpha Fire Company was dispatched at about 8:20 p.m. to the 1200 block of Old Boalsburg Road, where a caller reported flames coming from a window of the home.
Crews encountered heavy fire on the first floor and transmitted a second alarm to bring Boalsburg Fire Company to the scene for assistance due to frigid weather conditions and to ensure enough personnel were on hand, Centre Region Fire Director Shawn Kauffman said.
The fire was knocked down quickly and contained to the first floor, which sustained heavy damage.
Two cats belonging to the family died in the fire, Kauffman said. The residents were not home at the time.
The house was posted as uninhabitable as a result of the damage, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
American Red Cross of Greater Pennsylvania volunteers provided help to the residents. Centre LifeLink EMS also responded to scene.
