Centre County added 40 new COVID-19 cases on Thursday to bring its total to 578 since the first was confirmed on March 20, according to the Pennsylvania Department of Health.
It marked the county’s second-highest single-day increase, behind only the 47 reported on Wednesday. Most new cases were in the State College and University Park zip codes
The county also had 454 new negative test results reported on Thursday. A total of 15,694 patients in Centre County have tested negative for the virus.
In the past two weeks, the county has added 171 new cases.
According to DOH data, Centre County has one COVID-19 hospitalization. Across Pennsylvania, 530 COVID-19 patients are hospitalized, with 70 requiring use of a ventilator.
Statewide, the health department reported 1,160 new positives, increasing Pennsylvania’s total to 136,771. It was the state’s largest increase since July 24 and included 257 new cases in Philadelphia and 128 in York.
There were 13,358 new negative test results statewide. A total of 1,565,443 patients in Pennsylvania have tested negative for the virus.
Over the past seven days, 166,499 COVID-19 tests have been administered in Pennsylvania with 5,075 positive cases.
An estimated 81% of COVID-19 patients in the state — about 110,785 — have recovered, according to a DOH calculation. The recovery estimate decreased by 1%.
The health department reported 20 new COVID-19 deaths, increasing the state’s total at 7,732. DOH has reported 11 total COVID-19 deaths for Centre County, the most recent on Aug. 14. The coroner’s office has confirmed only seven, ranging in age from 74 to 96.
Most COVID-19 hospitalizations and deaths have been among patients 65 and older, according to DOH.
Of the patients who have tested positive the age breakdown is as follows:
- Approximately 1% are ages 0-4;
- Nearly 2% are ages 5-12;
- Approximately 4% are ages 13-18;
- Nearly 11% are ages 19-24;
- Approximately 37% are ages 25-49;
- Approximately 22% are ages 50-64; and
- Approximately 23% are ages 65 or older
Among Centre County’s total cases, 531 are confirmed and 47 are probable. All 40 cases reported on Thursday were confirmed.
