A plan to speed up traffic on a section of Interstate 80 goes into effect come Monday, Aug. 11.
PennDot will be raising the speed limit on I-80, from 65 mph to a maximum speed of 70 as part of a pilot program.
The higher speed limit will cover an 88 mile stretch of of I-80 from Exit 101 in DuBois, across Centre County, to mile marker 189 in Clinton County.
A 16 mile section of I-380 in Monroe County will also be going to the 70 mph speed limit.
The 70 mph speed limit has been in place on 97 miles of the Pennsylvania Turnpike since July 22.
And this is just the start. PennDot says it will be evaluating other 65 mph roads to see if those highways can handle higher speed limits. Roads that get the green light could go to the 70 mph limit next spring.
The higher speed limits were included in the transportation bill signed by the General Assembly last fall.
