A trace amount of snow fell Sunday on State College — one of the earliest snowfalls on record here, AccuWeather.com senior meteorologist Eric Wilhelm said.
‘It’s very unusual,’ Wilhelm told StateCollege.com.
Between about 6 a.m. and 8:30 a.m., he said, very light snow fell in the Centre Region.
Some snowflakes mixed with rain overnight, but didn’t really touch the ground until daybreak, Wilhelm said.
‘Certainly up above about 1,500 feet above sea level — that’s where you saw the snow accumulating and actually sticking to things,’ he said. Philipsburg received a little more than an inch of snow; Ebensburg, in Cambria County, about an inch.
The lighter, trace frozen precipitation in the Centre Region may mark the earliest date a trace snowfall has been reported in State College, Wilhelm said. The previous record was logged Oct. 3, 2003.
Normally, according to AccuWeather.com, the cold season’s first snow accumulations in State College materialize later in the month, between Oct. 20 and Oct. 31.
Another anomaly was recorded on Oct. 15, 2009, when State College saw 4.5 inches of snow.
But no more snow is expected in State College soon, Wilhelm said. Cool and damp conditions should linger Sunday, with a couple rain showers anticipated Monday, according to AccuWeather.com.
Beautiful weather is forecast to return around mid-week. And next weekend should bring sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s.
‘We’re done with the winter preview,’ Wilhelm said. ‘ … It’s going to be really nice.’
