Bellefonte Children’s Fair Set for Saturday

Since 1949, the families of Bellefonte have celebrated the end of the school year with a children’s fair. Always the first Saturday in June, the one-day event features food, games, activities and entertainment for the whole family — and raises money for the community’s parks.

This year, the fair will be held from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on June 2, at the intersection of Curtin and Armor streets in Bellefonte.

The fair always takes its chances with the weather, and last year it was held on a beautiful day with no rain. Like almost everything at the fair, food sales are a cooperative activity with local churches, which sell Canyon Pizza and run the Create-a-Cookie booth. Miller’s Shaved Ice, King’s Funnel Cakes, Scott’s Roasting, JB Concessions, Nutty Bavarian, Culligan water, Brazilian Munchies and Kiwanis ice cream also will be available for purchase.

The Bellefonte High School football team will assist with the fair’s setup, and the Bellefonte High School swim team will operate the games. State Sen. Jake Corman provides one of the most popular attractions — the moon bounce.

This year, the fair will feature additional fun at booths by Lincoln Caverns, Krislund Camp, the YMCA, Bellefonte Key Club and many others. Friends of Ezra Nanes, a candidate for state senate, will sponsor the entertainment tent. A new addition is a nursing and child-changing area sponsored by State College Doula.

The fair also will have a few special characters stopping by to greet everyone throughout the day, and magician Richard Benninghoff will perform a few tricks.

The Master Gardeners of Centre County plant sale will include items donated by Woodrings Floral Gardens and the Bellefonte Garden Club.

The entertainment for the day includes:

■ 10:30 a.m. — American Raiders Baton Corps

■ 11:15 a.m. — Hot Styles Dance Company

■ Noon — Bellefonte Community Band

■ 1:15 p.m. — Tir Na Nag Irish Step Dancers

■ 2 p.m. — Sauce

All of the proceeds from the fair support the improvement of children’s facilities at Bellefonte parks. To date, the Bellefonte Sunrise Rotary Club has been able to help Bellefonte Borough add playground equipment at the Teener League, Parkview Heights and Governors parks, help the the YMCA replace the slide at Kepler’s Pool and help with the installation of handicap-accessible playground equipment at Governors Park.
