Blast of Cold on the Way but Weekend Warm Up Expected for Memorial Day Celebration

It’s not what you want to hear with the long Memorial Day holiday weekend set to begin.

The National Weather Service has posted a Frost Advisory for the State College area.

The advisory will be in effect from midnight until 7 a.m. Saturday. Low temperatures are expected to sink into the mid-30s overnight and that could damage sensitive plants.

Fortunately, conditions are expected to improve significantly. And that’s good news for the Boalsburg Fire Company’s Memorial Day carnival. Bad weather can make or break the event.

In years with clear skies, the carnival has raised as much as $16,000 for the company, fire chief Van Winter says. But in years plagued by rain, that number can sink as low as only $6,000.

The carnival opened on Thursday evening – a day that Accuweather meteorologist Paul Walker says was “a little bit gloomy,” with chilly temperatures and intermittent showers.

But there’s good news despite the Frost Advisory. Walker says Memorial Day weekend is expected to warm up with sunny skies in the forecast– the perfect weather to enjoy the wide range of festivities in Boalsburg and the surrounding area.

Friday is expected to reach a high temperature of 66 degrees, which Walker says is still a bit lower than the average for this time of year, which is about 71 degrees. Friday will also be bring a welcome change from Thursday’s overcast skies, with a “good mix of clouds and sun.”

Walker says anyone with a vegetable garden might want to take precautions Friday night with that Frost Advisory in effect. Temperatures are expected to drop to around 37 degrees.

However, Saturday will be milder with a high temperature around 66 degrees and “plenty of sunshine,” which should be ideal weather for taking in Boalsburg’s annual Memorial Day parade.

Sunday will warm up some more, with a high temperature of 76 degrees and a mix of clouds and sunshine.

But Walker says Memorial Day itself – the cornerstone of Boalsburg’s “Day in Town” festival, complete with live music and vendors – could see a thunderstorm roll through the area. The storm is not a guarantee (nor is it expected to be particularly severe) but Walker warns that at basically any point in the day the skies could open up for some rain.
