Boalsburg lays claim as the possible birthplace of Memorial Day, and throughout the weekend the community will once again celebrate the holiday with both fun events and moments of remembrance.
It all gets started Thursday night with the Boalsburg Fire Company Carnival, which will be held on the carnival grounds behind Station 3 through Monday (see below for times). The carnival features midway rides and games and multiple food stands ran by our members including barbecue chicken, hot sausage sandwiches, french fries, burgers and hot dogs. The carnival also includes bingo in the truck room of the station, and Wristband Days on Thursday and Sunday, when $15 gets individuals unlimited rides.
The fire company parade gets started at 5 p.m. on Saturday. The Parade route will be east on Pine Street to Boal Avnue, turning right on to Boal Avenue, then right and heading west on Main Street and back to Wagner Street.
On Saturday and Sunday both the Boal Mansion and PA Military Museum will be open. Both days the Military Museum will host ‘World War II Revisited,’ in which re-enactors will bivouac on the grounds, portraying field life in the European Theater in 1944 and 1945.
A full slate of events is scheduled for Memorial Day on Monday, kicking off with the 36th Annual Boalsburg Memorial Day Run. The 3.8 mile run or walk begins at 8:30 a.m. in Blue Spring Park and winds through historic Boalsburg. The Day in Town festival goes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and features live music and entertainment, food and arts and crafts vendors. The Boalsburg Garden Club Plant Sale also will be held during festival hours.
Also during this time, Boal Mansion will be open with Civil War re-enactors, live music, food, arts and craft vendors, a petting zoo, a marionette puppet show and tours of the Columbus Chapel.
And from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Military Museum grounds, the regional chapter of the Antique Automobile Club of America will host its annual car show, with pre-war through modern classics on display throughout the grounds.
The day concludes with a walk to the cemetery at 5:45 p.m. and a memorial service at 6 p.m.
