Drivers will encounter some traffic restrictions on a portion of North Atherton Street in Patton Township as PennDOT begins bridge repair work this week.

The work will rehabilitate the bridge spanning Interstate 99 as motorists travel westbound toward Gray’s Woods/Waddle, improving the bridge’s condition from fair to good.

Starting Friday, the left lane will be closed and the contractor will implement traffic control measures, including temporary paint lines, channelizing devices and road construction signs. On Monday, work will begin on repairs to the left lane of the bridge.

The project involves concrete deck repairs, substructure repairs, replacement of approach slabs, concrete pier repairs and strip seal replacements, paving and guide rail improvements, according to a PennDOT news release. The bridge was constructed in 1971 and carries an average of 8,700 vehicles per day.

Elsewhere nearby, PennDOT’s road improvement project for a 13-mile stretch of I-99 is continuing, with current work taking place this week in the northbound passing lane from Port Matilda to State College. The entire project goes from mile marker 56 at the Blair/Centre county line to mile marker 69 near State College and includes concrete patching, and longitudinal joint cleaning and sealing.

The I-99 improvement project is expected to be completed in June.
