CATA bus riders will pay a little extra starting July 1.

CATA is increasing rider rates for the first time since 2010 to address an increase in general costs, such as fuel and employee benefits, according to CATA Spokesperson Jacqueline Sheader.

“It’s basically inflation, the increased cost of doing business,” she says. “It had been quite awhile since we last increased rates and the increase was necessary at this point for us.”

The cost of a CATA bus ride will increase by 25 cents starting July 1.

The cash fare will increase from $1.50 to $1.75 with similar increases for bus tokens and passes.

Here’s a detailed outline of the fare increases:

– Cash Fare (one-way) increasing from $1.50 to $1.75

– Tokens (single), $1.50 to $1.75

– Roll of tokens, $29 to $34

– Reduced fare, 75 cents to 85 cents

– Reduced fare coupon book, $15 to $17

– One-month OnePass, $59 to $69

– Four-month OnePass, $229 to $268

CATA is not increasing fares for CATARIDE service.

The company’s more than $15 million budget is largely supported by rider fares.

At the same time, nine local municipalities and Penn State University contribute to the budget, and those contributions also increased this year.

For the operating budget, the group will see a three percent increase. For the borough, the fee will increase from $89,469 to $90,784. CATA says the increase is necessary to receive state funds that require a local match. The funds will go toward an expanded CATA facility and new buses.

Additionally, the borough’s capital budget contribution will increase by $4,203 to $17,609.
