The new year is underway and it’s about time to put fresh-cut Christmas trees out to the curb for recycling in the Centre Region.

In State College Borough, collection will begin Monday, Jan. 6, and continue through Friday, Jan. 17, with crews canvassing town once each week. Trees should be free of lights, ornaments and tree stands and should be placed with the trunk closest to the curb, according to the borough.

If a snowstorm is predicted, residents are asked to move their trees away from the curb to facilitate plowing and prevent trees from becoming buried in a snowbank.

Beginning Jan. 21, residents can submit a request online or call the State College Public Works Department at (814) 234-7140 to schedule a pickup for regular Monday brush collection.

For residential customers of Waste Management in Benner, College, Ferguson, Harris and Patton townships, non-artificial Christmas trees will be collected at the curb on regular collection days during the week of Monday, Jan. 6, to Friday, Jan. 10.

Trees should be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. and should be free of snow, ice, bags, lights, stands or decorations. Any that are frozen to the ground will not be collected. Trees taller than 6 feet should be cut it into lengths of 6 feet or smaller, according to the Centre Region Council of Governments Refuse and Recycling Program.

Collected trees will be taken to the State College Borough Compost Facility for recycling.
