UPDATED @ 5:36 p.m. Thursday: Carmike Cinemas, the parent company of the Cinema 6 Theatre, chose not to renew the lease for the Benner Pike property, Friedman Real Estate Group CEO Ed Friedman told StateCollege.com via e-mail. His organization controls the property.

A published assertion — included in the Centre Daily Times — that the property ownership declined to renew the cinema’s lease is not correct, Friedman noted.

Cinema 6 Theatre, the six-screen discount cinema at 501 Benner Pike, State College, will close Sunday, the cinema staff confirmed Thursday to StateCollege.com.

Community rumors and speculation surrounding the cinema’s future began swirling earlier this month.

Then, this morning, the Centre Daily Times reported that employees expect the operation to close this weekend.

Staff reached by StateCollege.com Thursday afternoon said the cinema is indeed scheduled to close Sunday.

Other questions were referred to the cinema’s parent company, Georgia-based Carmike Cinemas.

A week ago, StateCollege.com began approaching the Carmike corporate office for information about Cinema 6’s future. Repeated inquiries left there — including one on Thursday morning — have gone unanswered.

The cinema, in College Township, dates to the 1990s. Until January 2009, it screened new releases.

At that point, it switched to showing second-run movies only and reduced the standard admission price, across the board, to $1.

StateCollege.com is continuing to follow this story and will post additional information as it becomes available.
