After hitting a record-high temperature Sunday of 84 degrees at Penn State’s campus, the State College area will be on the receiving end of a “cruel joke from Mother Nature,” according to AccuWeather Meteorologist Tom Kines.

After starting out warm and hitting about 60 degrees, temperatures are expected to dramatically decline during the day Tuesday and will hit about 40 by evening, Kines says. Low temperatures overnight are expected to hit the 20s.

“All good things must come to an end and that will be the case [Tuesday],” he says.

A cold front approaching will push rain into the area either late Monday night or early Tuesday with temperatures falling during the course of the day Tuesday.

“Overall [Tuesday] is a dramatically different day than what the past few have been,” Kines says.

It’s not out of the question that the rain could turn into a bit of snow in the higher elevations, such as Clearfield and Dubois, Kines says.

“Don’t dress for what the temperature is when you leave in the morning because it will be much colder by late afternoon,” Kines says.

The chilly weather will continue into Wednesday with temperatures possibly not making it out of the 40s. However, temperatures will head back up to near 60 on Thursday and Friday, matching typical weather for this time of year.
