Detours Planned for Wall Repair in Bellefonte

Updated March 29, 2023 with additional details from PennDOT.

An estimated four-month project to permanently repair a partially collapsed wall along a busy thoroughfare in Bellefonte is slated to begin next week, and with it will come detours.

The Pennsylvania Department of Transportation expects work to begin on Tuesday, April 4 to fix the wall that collapsed in November on a section of South Water Street/Route 150 between Mill and High streets. A temporary repair was completed in December

All northbound traffic headed toward downtown Bellefonte will be detoured to Stoney Batter. The official detour for motorists headed toward Milesburg will route vehicles to South Spring Street, West Bishop Street, North Allegheny Street and West Linn Street to then return to Route 150.

All southbound traffic headed toward State College will travel in the northbound lane on South Water Street. Drivers should be aware of the potential for 15-minute traffic stoppages as needed, according to a post on the Bellefonte Borough Facebook page.

The sidewalk in the area of the collapse remains closed. Pedestrians will be able to use the foot bridge spanning Spring Creek.

PennDOT anticipates project completion by Aug. 7, with detours lifted by the end of July.

The wall under the road along Spring Creek collapsed on Nov. 12. A PennDOT official said at the time that it appeared erosion below and behind the wall from high water in the creek caused the collapse.

The repair project will include removal of the temporary wall, construction of a new retaining wall, full-depth paving, new pipes and inlets, concrete curb and sidewalk and pavement markings. HRI, Inc. of State College is the contractor on the $393,000 project.
