Excavator Topples Over at High School, No Injuries Reported

An accident at the State College Area High School created a scary situation for one construction worker on Thursday afternoon.

According to news release from the State College Area School District, an excavator fell into a shallow hole near the high school south building, but there were no injuries.

Construction crews from Blair Petroleum Maintenance and Construction removed an old underground oil tank on Thursday morning as part of the preparations for the high school project renovations and construction later this year. At about 1 p.m., a member of the construction team was filling in the excavation made earlier in the day when the ground beneath his excavator gave way.

The news release states that the excavator toppled over, breaking a side window and sliding into the hole. The operator was able to free himself and climb to safety without injury. Luckily, the crane that had removed the oil tank earlier in the day was still on site. Crews used the crane to pull the excavator back out of the hole.

No students were impacted. The damaged excavator is property of the construction company.
