With heavy rain in the forecast for Thursday evening and throughout the day on Friday, the National Weather Service has issued a flood watch for much of central Pennsylvania, including Centre County.
Rainfall of 1 to 2 inches, with locally higher amounts, is expected before the system moves through on Friday night, according to NWS. That precipitation combined with already wet soil from recent rain will create the chance for flooding in some places.
‘This amount of rain will likely result in minor flooding of poor drainage and low lying areas,’ according to NWS. ‘Moderate river rises are expected as well, with the potential for minor flooding of tributaries and smaller streams.’
The flood watch is in effect from 7 p.m. Thursday to 7 p.m. Friday.
Temperatures will climb as well. According to AccuWeather, the State College area is expected to go from a high of 39 on Thursday to a high of 55 of Friday.
As for next week, it appears as of now that those who are dreaming of a white Christmas in Centre County may be out of luck. AccuWeather forecasts a dry Christmas Eve and Christmas Day on Monday and Tuesday, with highs in the low to mid-30s both days.
According to AccuWeather senior meteorologist Alex Sosnowski, a weak system may produce some snow just to the west and north in the Ohio Valley, northern mid-Atlantic, eastern Great Lakes and New England on Monday and Tuesday, but the system looks like it will not impact central Pennsylvania.
