Fraser Street Garage, Calder Way to See Temporary Closures

Work on the final stages of the Fraser Street realignment project will cause several key closures next week, State College borough announced.

The Fraser Street parking garage, on the 100 block, will close at 7 a.m. Monday (Oct. 24), according to the announcement. The borough has asked that all vehicles in the garage be removed by 11 p.m. Sunday (Oct. 23). Any vehicles left there will not be able to exit until noon Friday (Oct. 28), when the garage will reopen.

The 100 block of the street itself will be closed during the same period.

Parking customers who have monthly passes for the Fraser Street garage may use the Beaver Avenue garage instead for the week. Their Fraser-garage passes will work in the Beaver Avenue garage through Friday.

In addition, Calder Way at Fraser Street will be closed from Tuesday until Friday morning.

The closures are necessary to allow the completion of entrance work at the Fraser garage, conduits across Calder Way and final paving on Fraser Street, according to the borough announcement.

The borough has encouraged businesses to make delivery drivers aware of the closures. State College officials have sent notices to businesses and monthly-parking-pass holders, and a message board at the garage entrance has alerted motorists to the pending closure there.

Also, the borough noted, the Calder Way closure will force the rerouting of tractor-trailer deliveries from that part of that alleyway. Deliveries will be accommodated on the west side of the 100 block of South Allen Street, according to the borough. There, parking meters will be bagged temporarily to allow additional loading-zone space.

The street-realignment project is expected to be complete by November. It’s restructuring the 100 block of South Fraser Street, largely to eliminate the dog-leg effect at the West Beaver Avenue intersection, improve downtown traffic flow and bolster pedestrian safety.
