Phil Schneider remembers going to Mt. Gretna Lake as soon as he could drive.

Schneider, who is now the safety director at the lake, says he loved to go to Gretna with his friends to enjoy the many water activities the lake offers. Years later, the same activities are still bringing children and their families to the quiet beach in Pennsylvania Dutch Country.

“There’s a certain amount of freedom and safety here for young children,” he says. “I think that’s what families seem to like about the place. It’s got enough room that you can roam and still feel control with your children.”

Mt. Gretna Lake and Beach is located about two hours southeast of State College and only 15 minutes from the attractions in Hershey. The lake and beach compound has been family-owned and operated for more than 80 years. Visitors can really spread out. The facility includes an eight-acre beach, recreation lawn and picnic grove areas. Children can play volleyball or build a sand castle while mom and dad sack out near the water.

“The other thing that’s important to people is the sand beach,” Schneider says. “It’s the ability to be at the beach without being at the beach, and without the three hour drive (from the Harrisburg area).”

“The epitome of a good afternoon is when you see some people just snoozing out on their own beach chair. That means they’re at ease.”

For those looking to relax, there are two wooden docks in the swimming area where people can catch a few rays before diving back into the water. There’s also a diving board dock, an over-the-water swing and, for the more daring, a 14-foot tall high dive platform. Canoe and kayak rentals are also available so you can explore more of the lake.

Schneider says that the borough of Mt. Gretna is a great destination for a day trip because of all the different family activities. Visitors can start the day at La Sorelle Porch and Pantry restaurant for some breakfast, then hike the nearby Lebanon Valley Rail-Trail before relaxing at the lake in the heat of the afternoon. Families can even play some mini golf before heading home.

And Schneider recommends stopping by the infamous Jigger Shop Ice Cream Parlor for a tasty treat on the way out of town. The specialty dish, known as a “Jigger,” is one of the most popular soda fountain desserts in the area.

“You can come and, with a little bit of planning, you can stretch out a day and keep yourself busy without leaving town.”
