Jerry Sandusky Will Serve Life Sentence in SCI Greene Prison

Jerry Sandusky was transferred to the State Correctional Institution at Greene on Wednesday, which a spokeswoman for the Department of Corrections confirmed will be his “home” for the next 30-60 years. 

Sentenced to life behind bars on Oct. 9, Sandusky, 68, spent 10 days immediately post-sentence in the Centre County Correctional Facility and was then transferred to Camp Hill Prison for evaluation at its diagnostic and evaluation center before being moved, for a final time, to SCI Greene. 

A spokeswoman for the Pennsylvania Department of Corrections at Camp Hill said Sandusky will be in a single cell in protective custody and under 24 hour surveillance. Typically, she said, an inmate in such incarceration will spend up to 23 hours a day in his cell. Any necessary procedures or services will be brought to him. 

SCI Greene is a maximum security prison and in Waynesburg, Pa., more than three hours away from State College. 

“While we normally do not discuss placement of inmates, this individual’s notoriety called for the release of this information,” said John Wetzel, Corrections Secretary.

“We make individual decisions based on facts. Given the high profile nature of this individual, coupled with the nature of his crimes, this makes him very vulnerable in a prison setting,” Wetzel said. “As such, he will be placed in protective custody at SCI Greene to ensure his safety while in custody.”

Judge John Cleland sentence Sandusky to life in prison for his sex crimes against children on Oct. 9, after Sandusky was convicted on 45 of 48 counts of child sexual abuse on June 22. His defense team has since filed an appeal. A hearing has been scheduled for Dec. 10.
