Long-Term Lane Closures to Be Lifted on I-99

A bit of relief from traffic congestion is on the way for Centre County motorists.

Long-term lane closures on a 3-mile section of Interstate 99 will be lifted by the close of business on Monday, according to PennDOT. Those closures have been in place since the end of May for structure repair and rehabilitation of the bridges spanning the Bellefonte Trail near the Waddle Road interchange.

That phase of work will be completed on Monday, but until then, PennDOT reminds motorists to use both lanes to the merge point and to take turns merging into the open lane through the work zone.

While the long-term closures will be lifted, work on the road will continue in July. On Thursday, July 5, a short-term closure of the northbound travel lane will be in place for repairs to a sinkhole near the Waddle Road interchange. Drivers may also encounter short delays while surveyors locate existing transverse joints over the length of the roadway.

Other work will be suspended until after the conclusion of the Central Pennsylvania Festival of the Arts on July 15. After that nighttime milling and paving will take place from 7 p.m. to 5 a.m. on the northbound lanes and 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. on the southbound lanes. Short-term lane closures will be in place while this work is taking place and lanes will remain open when work is not taking place.

Glenn O. Hawbaker, Inc. of State College is the contractor for the $3.8 million project to improve ride quality and extend the useful life of the roadway.
