‘Major Travel Delays’ Expected Monday on North Atherton Street

Work to change long-term traffic patterns for the North Atherton Street project is expected to result in major travel delays on Monday, according to PennDOT.

The longer delays are expected only on Monday and drivers are encouraged to use alternate routes when possible.

A long-term traffic pattern has been in place between West Aaron Drive and North Hills Place with two lanes open inbound heading toward the Penn State campus and one lane open outbound. Work associated with that traffic pattern will be completed on Monday and the restriction closing one lane will be lifted.

As that portion of work is being completed, crews will be working to implement a new traffic pattern from North Hills Place to Cherry Lane. The change will close the far right lane heading inbound. When the contractor is not working, two lanes will be open for inbound and outbound traffic. When work is taking place, traffic will be reduced to a single lane inbound in the work zone.

Because the turning lane will be used for inbound traffic, left turns will be prohibited through the length of the work zone.

With the changeover in traffic patterns, there will be one lane inbound and one lane outbound on Monday. Flaggers will be at each signalized intersection between Aaron Drive and Cherry Lane to assist with traffic flow.

Contractors also will be installing a water line this week between Cherry Lane and Hillcrest Avenue, with daytime lane closures maintaining traffic to at least one lane in each direction while the contractor is working. 

Aside from the long-term lane closure between North Hills Place and Cherry Lane, no lane closures will be in place from Friday, Aug. 31 through Monday, Sept. 3.
