Before you know it, that big pit at the corner of College Avenue and Atherton Street will be a striking new addition to the State College cityscape.
The Metropolitan — a new 12-story, mixed-use development — is expected to open its doors near the end of summer 2016, according to a news release from developer Penn Trust Properties. In preparation, the developers are now officially seeking businesses and tenants to fill the open commercial and residential space.
The building plans include retail space on the first floor, office space on the second, student housing on the third through ninth, with professional and housing and sky-high offices rounding out the final few floors. State College-based realtors Property Management, Inc. and Trombley Real Estate will help fill the building, according to the news release.
The developers say they expect the spaces to lease quickly. Once completed, the building is envisioned as an “economic benefit” and new “downtown landmark.”
Construction got underway in June 2014 after the proposal worked its way through approvals from State College borough government. Crews have been excavating the site to make room for building foundations and underground parking. An artist’s rendering of the final project will be added to the fence around the site in the coming weeks to give passers-by a better idea of what’s to come.
The site currently dominates the State College skyline, even without the building. Two massive tower cranes are now set up in the construction zone. Crews just went through the seemingly death-defying process of installing the second one. Part of College Avenue had to be closed for much of last week to accommodate the complicated process of erecting the crane, but the road has since been reopened.
