Getting around town when you don’t own a car can be a real hassle.
Now, people who’ve had to rely on taking the bus or a taxi have another option.
State College Borough is partnering with Zipcar Inc., a car sharing program that rents out cars for short periods of time 24 hours a day seven days a week.
State College community members can join the program by paying a yearly $60 fee. Penn State students can join for a discounted rate of $25. Rates for vehicles start at $7.50 an hour and $69 a day.
Students who are over the age of 18 may drive the cars, while members of the community must 21 and over.
Gas, insurance, a reserved parking spot and up to 180 miles of driving per day are included with the car.
You’ll have a variety of cars to choose from, including the Ford Focus, Ford Escape, Nissan Sentra, Toyota Prius and Honda Civic. The cars will be available at three locations – the Beaver garage, the Beaver lot and McAllister Deck.
Reservations can be made over the phone or on Zipcar’s website. Members with smartphones can download the Zipcar app to make reservations.
Zipcar is handing out a free lunch to the first 200 people to stop by after 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Beaver Avenue lot. They’ll be on hand to answer questions about how car-sharing program works.
