No. 11 Penn State Women’s Soccer Prevails Over Rutgers in PKs

No. 11 Penn State women’s soccer advanced to the Big Ten semifinals thanks to a thrilling victory over No. 25 Rutgers in penalty kicks on Sunday.

Neither the Nittany Lions nor the Scarlet Knights scored a goal in regulation or overtime, but four players converted against star goalkeeper Casey Murphy.

How It Happened

Penn State dominated Rutgers in shots (21-8) and corner kicks (14-3) in Piscataway, yet 110 minutes of action wasn’t enough to determine a winner. In their sixth overtime match of the season, the Nittany Lions mustered up a strong performance against Murphy, a regular on the U.S. women’s youth national teams.

After missing the past four matches with an injury, senior forward Frannie Crouse was activated for penalty kicks. Emily Ogle and Brittany Basinger delivered right off the bat to give Penn State an early advantage. Crouse and Charlotte Williams missed their attempts, but Marissa Sheva and Maddie Elliston came through to down the Scarlet Knights.
