The Nittany Lions might take the field against old rival West Virginia according to a Penn State official familiar with the negotiations. The series just might not take place until 2020 or beyond.
It has been almost 21 years since the two programs last met in 1992. The Nittany Lions won that meeting 40-26 before joining the Big Ten in 1993. The series, which Penn State leads 48-9-2, began in 1902 and was played every year from 1947 until 1992.
While it’s unknown if current Penn State coach Bill O’Brien will still be calling plays in Happy Valley by 2020 or beyond, the university has begun to return to regional rivalries since his arrival. The addition of Maryland and Rutgers to the Big Ten adds two foes within short driving distance to the schedule annually. The Nittany Lions’ four game series against Pittsburgh restarting in 2016 would be the first of two more regional contests for fans to look forward to if West Virginia and Penn State were to negotiate a series.
In April, Penn State also confirmed that the program was in talks with Miami about renewing a series with the Hurricanes for a time to be determined in the future.
