Rapid Recap: Indiana 72, Penn State 49
How It Happened: Penn State held Indiana to less than 40 percent shooting in the first half, but the Hoosiers exploded from behind the arc in the second half to pull away from Penn State. Indiana went 6-for-8 from deep and shot 58 percent from the field in the second half while the Nittany Lions only made a third of their shots after 40 minutes.
Turning Point: With Penn State hoping to play a stronger half, Indiana opened up the final 20 minutes with an 8-0 run over the opening 65 seconds of the half. While it would have taken a herculean effort to knock off Indiana at home, the run ended hopes of any such effort.
Player of the Game: Victor Oladipo showed why he is one of the best players in the nation, scoring 19 points, pulling down six rebounds and dishing out five assists. Penn State’s DJ Newbill also had an impressive outing with his 18 point, four steal and seven rebound performance.
Stat of the Game: Penn State was able to hold preseason player of the year candidate Cody Zeller scoreless from the floor, his only two points coming from the free throw line.
What It Means: Penn State falls to 0-7 in the conference.
On Deck: A noon tip Saturday with No. 14 Ohio State at the Bryce Jordan Center.
Halftime Update: Indiana 33, Penn State 19
The Nittany Lions were able to hold Indiana to 10 points under its first-half scoring average, but cold shooting and 12 fouls helped Indiana slowly increase its lead Wednesday night.
Penn State shot 30 percent from the field while the Hoosiers shot 37 percent from the field. The Nittany Lions were led by Jermaine Marshall’s nine points and four rebounds. Sophomore DJ Newbill was the only other Penn State starter to score, registering four points.
Indiana’s Cody Zeller was held to only two points, and guards Victor Oladipo and Kevin Ferrell led the Hooisers with seven points each. Eight first-half offensive rebounds by Indiana led to a handful of second-chance points and plenty of defensive fouls as three different Nittany Lion starters were pegged with two fouls heading into the half.
