Penn State Athletics has announced its intentions to renovate and significantly upgrade Beaver Stadium, the university releasing details of its highly anticipated Facilities Master Plan on Monday morning.
Beaver Stadium has been renovated a handful of times since opening in 1960, the most recent significant changes coming in 2001 with the addition of over 10,000 seats.
Nationally, a rise in HD TVs and high ticket prices have done little to reverse the steady decrease in attendance figures across the country. While Penn State has by in large been able to avoid that trend, there is little doubt that the Nittany Lions’ home has been in desperate need of a facelift and in turn an improved fan experience. In 2014 two massive, $10 million 4K scoreboards were added to the stadium in the first wave of changes.
As such, according to the university, Penn State will take part in substantial renovations to Beaver Stadium, the upgrades will include:
- A significant increase in chair back seating
- New concessions locations and food options
- New restrooms
- Wider concourses and additional premium seating options.
The stadium’s capacity is slated to stay above 100,000.
The renovations are scheduled to take place at a time to be determined outside the initial five-year window of the master plan.
