Penn State Football: Defensive Tackle Bolds To Transfer

Corey Bolds, a redshirt freshman defensive tackle, announced on Sunday via Twitter that he intends to transfer from Penn State. 

Bolds played his high school football for New Jersey powerhouse Paramus Catholic before committing to the Nittany Lions on national signing day in 2017. The Paterson, N.J., native never saw the field for Penn State, using his redshirt year last season.

‘First off I would like to thank Coach [James] Franklin and Coach Spence [Sean Spencer] along with the rest of the staff for giving me an opportunity at Penn State University,’ he wrote. ‘[M]y time here has been memorable & I will forever cherish the bonds with guys I can now call my brothers. With that being said, I’m announcing I will no longer be attending the university. I will now be exploring options for the best decision for myself & my family. God bless.’

If Bolds elects to transfer to another Division I program, he’ll have to sit out the 2018 season due to NCAA rules and would have three years of eligibility left.

Bolds was stuck behind a handful of defensive tackles on Penn State’s depth chart, with the Nittany Lions recently welcoming true freshmen PJ Mustipher and Judge Culpepper to campus. Aeneas Hawkins will arrive at the end of this month with the rest of the 2018 recruiting class.

The 6-foot-3, 289-pound Bolds accumulated scholarship offers from Rutgers, Clemson, Georgia, Michigan, and Ohio State, among others, before picking the Nittany Lions. He was a three-star prospect and the 16th ranked recruit from New Jersey in 2017, according to 247Sports.

It’s currently unknown where Bolds will end up next. His departure brings Penn State to 85 scholarships.
