Even though heavy rains forced Saturday’s Blue-White Game to be called just two plays into the third quarter, thousands of Nittany Lion fans went home happy. Wet, but happy. (Check out the gallery at the right for nearly 30 photos from the day.)
First, many secured autographs from and had photos taken with their favorite Penn State football players before the game in the dry lower concourse of Beaver Stadium.
And second, Penn State won. (True, Penn State also lost, but…)
The Blue squad beat the White squad behind a 17-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Matt McGloin to wide receiver Brandon Moseby-Felder. Wide receiver Evan Lewis did double-duty, also handling the place-kicking duties, and rounded out the scoring with a 20-yard field goal.
McGloin completed five of 10 for 109 yards. After the game, quarterback Rob Bolden said he was not yet sure whether he would return for the 2011 season. Bolden originally planned to leave Penn State in January, but recanted and practiced with the Nittany Lions throughout the spring.
Coach Joe Paterno said he was “99 percent sure” either McGloin or Bolden would be the Nittany Lions’ starting quarterback to start the 2011 season, Paterno’s 46th as head coach and 62nd overall at Penn State.
LEADERS AND AWARD-WINNERS
In Saturday’s game, the top Nittany Lion running backs were Silas Redd (nine carries for 24 yards), Stephfon Green (4-13), Brandon Beachum (6-24) and Curtis Dukes (3-15).
Linebacker Glenn Carson had a game-high five tackles, while fellow ’backer Khairi Fortt also had five tackles and forced a fumble. Defensive end Kyle Baublitz recorded two sacks for minus-17 yards among his four hits.
At halftime, four Nittany Lions were recognized for their efforts during spring practice:
- Defensive tackle Jordan Hill (Steelton) was presented the Jim O’Hora Award and junior wide receiver Devon Smith earned the Red Worrell Award. The Nittany Lion coaching staff singled out Hill and Smith as the players who have best demonstrated exemplary conduct, loyalty, interest, attitude and improvement during spring practice.
- Redshirt junior tackle Mike Farrell and redshirt sophomore center Ty Howle were recognized as co-recipients of the Frank Patrick Total Commitment Memorial Award.
Penn State opens its 125th season Sept. 3 vs. Indiana State in Beaver Stadium and Alabama visits the Nittany Lions on Sept. 10 for the first time since 1989.
