James Franklin has had plenty of speakers visit his team over the past several months.
It’s part of an ongoing mission to keep his players informed and to continue to bring new perspectives and information into the program.
This week’s guest was Penn State wrestling coach Cael Sanderson.
Sanderson spoke to the squad before Wednesday’s practice and had a little bit of fun with running backs and special teams coach Charles Huff.
“Huff has told stories about how he can hit a fastball of a major league pitcher — which he couldn’t — and he’s also said he could hold his own with Cael Sanderson,” Franklin said. “It was a great opportunity to call Huff out in front of the whole team. And when Cael took his keys out of his pocket and his pen, and set it down, Huff’s face changed, and the whole room went crazy and that was the end of that.”
While in college Sanderson went a whopping 159-0, competing in the 2011 World Championships at 185 pounds. Coaching Penn State to four straight national titles hasn’t hurt his ability. So it’s safe to say that Sanderson had Huff beat in just about every area possible.
“Cael I think is like 220, but it’s like 18 percent body fat,” Franklin said. “I think Huff’s like 240 with like 42 percent body fat. Just different stages of life.”
But in defense of his assistant coach.
“Huff does run on the treadmill for 17 minutes every morning.” Franklin said smiling.
-Weekend Travels-
Penn State will spend this weekend on the recruiting trail — the team is done practicing for the week. Franklin will head out to several high school games before making his way back to State College on Sunday to watch tape of the Michigan/Rutgers game this Saturday. As a result, Franklin won’t be at his weekly radio show on Thursday night and will instead see his show hosted by strength and conditioning coach Dwight Galt and new Penn State athletic director Sandy Barbour.
