Penn State Hockey: Glen Honored With Conference Sportsmanship Award

The Big Ten announced earlier this week 24 honorees named Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners for the 2013-14 academic year.

Award winners were chosen from a group of more than 300 student-athletes who had displayed positive sportsmanship.

One member of each varsity sports team on every campus was chosen by his or her institution as a Sportsmanship Award honoree, and two Outstanding Sportsmanship Award winners were then selected from each institution.

All of the award winners distinguished themselves through sportsmanship and ethical behavior.

Golfer Christina Vosters was named on the women’s side and Penn State hockey forward David Glen was the men’s winner.

Glen was honored with the award after missing three games this past season following a bone marrow donation procedure. The operation was done after Glen was notified that he was a match for someone in need of a marrow transplant.

“A lot of people say it’s a sacrifice not to play,” said Glen at the time. “But hockey is just a game and this is an opportunity that goes beyond that. This gives me the chance to save a life and give someone a second chance at living.”

In an ironic twist, Glen was given two game misconducts this past season as well although neither were of the intentional nature.
