Penn State Hockey: Murray Set To Leave Program For Junior Hockey

Penn State forward Brett Murray is set to leave the program, StateCollege.com can confirm. The news was first reported by the Daily Collegian.

Murray won’t transfer according to Penn State but will head to junior hockey where his playing time, and season length, will greatly increase.

In truth Murray was always in tough spot, joining Penn State midway through the season two years ago as the Nittany Lions made a run at their first-ever NCAA Tournament appearance. He saw action in just 12 games that year and was never really a part of the main forward rotation. Murray was drafted by the Buffalo Sabres 99th overall in the 2016 NHL Draft.

This past season Murray skated in 21 games scoring one goal and adding five assists for six points, but was once again largely not a part of the main forward unit. It stands to reason that would only continue to be the case as Penn State welcomes a host of talented and young forwards to campus this fall, most all of whom are expected to make an impact early in their career.

Murray’s move to junior hockey will greatly increase his playing time, making the move positive for him and ultimately a manageable loss for the Nittany Lions.
