The Penn State Lionettes are national champions for the first time in the program’s history.

The Lionettes’ dance team took home first place Friday at the 2012 championships in Daytona Beach, Fla., with a final score of 9.777.

The competition, which is co-hosted by the National Cheerleading Association and National Dance Association, began on Wednesday and concludes Sunday. Penn State captured the Division 1A dance title. There are 12 dance divisions total.

The Lionettes placed third at nationals a year ago, their first in the competition style – they had competed in the entertainment style in all previous years – and have improved their final standing each year since their first trip to nationals in 2005.
