Penn State Thespians Cabaret Supports Centre County AIDS Resource Alliance

The Penn State Thespians will perform its annual MasquerAIDS charity cabaret on Sunday to raise money for the Centre County AIDS Resource Alliance.

The show, themed “Mx.” to represent the gender-neutral term used in place of Mr. or Mrs., will begin at 7:30 p.m. in Heritage Hall of the HUB-Robeson Center.

After the club chooses the cabaret’s theme in the fall, it puts together a set list of songs and dance numbers for the January performance, which marks the end of the Thespians’ fundraising period for the school year. Last year’s show raised almost $2,000 for the Centre County AIDS Resource Alliance, an organization based in Centre County that raises funds and awareness in the fight against AIDS.

Penn State Thespians have held the benefit performance every year since 2002.

Mx. will include numbers like “A Lovely Night” from La La Land, “La Vie Boheme” from Rent, and “Sincerely, Me” from Dear Evan Hansen. The cabaret is “miscast,” meaning anyone can perform a song or dance regardless of their sex, gender, or sexual orientation.

“The point of the cabaret is to celebrate that we’re all human,” Director Jason Schwartz said in a release. “With this theme in particular, the simple, universal ideas of acceptance and inclusion are promoted as the performers are encouraged to be their best selves.”
