Penn State women’s volleyball begins its quest for a record eighth national championship at 7:30 p.m. on Friday against LIU-Brooklyn. No. 16 seed Penn State will host the first and second rounds of the NCAA Tournament this weekend at Rec Hall.

Penn State (22-9, 14-6 Big Ten) enters its 36th consecutive NCAA Tournament under Coach Russ Rose, but this year’s Nittany Lions have an unusually steep uphill postseason climb in front of them. Penn State owns a sterling 92-28 all-time postseason record, yet it’s dealt with more losses this season than it has in nearly three decades. The Lions, however, are on a three-match roll heading into the tournament.

Pitt and Dayton will square off in the other opening match of the University Park regional.

What happened during the regular season is now behind the Nittany Lions, coming out of a stacked Big Ten conference that saw the top three teams — Nebraska, Minnesota, and Wisconsin — also spend the better part of the year as the nation’s three best. In total, five Big Ten programs are currently ranked among the Top 15.

Penn State owns a 7-0 all-time record against LIU Brooklyn.
