Penn State women’s volleyball assistant coach Dennis Hohenshelt is leaving the program after being named the head coach at Virginia, Penn State announced Sunday night.
Hohenshelt spent the last six seasons as an assistant on Russ Rose’s staff after spending the previous 10 years as an assistant with the men’s volleyball program.
‘In my heart I felt that it was an opportunity that I could not pass up and look forward to spending time in Charlottesville,’ Hohenshelt said in a press release.
Hohenshelt thanked numerous past and present university administrators in the release for increasing the visibility of the volleyball programs on campus, including Tim Curley and Graham Spanier.
During his time as an assistant, Hohenshelt focused on scouting, player development and recruiting. He helped former middle hitter Arielle Wilson set the NCAA record for career hitting percentage (.468) and current middle Katie Slay earn Big Ten Defensive Player of the Year in 2011.
‘Dennis is a great coach and I’m sure the players and alumni will embrace his energy as he enters a new era with the program,’ Rose said in the release.
