With an influx of traffic headed toward State College for this weekend’s Penn State White Out game against Iowa, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation is advising some drivers of the potential for travel delays along the way.
Motorists traveling from the Harrisburg area may encounter delays at the site of a bridge preservation project along Route 22 in Walker Township, Juniata County. The bridges, located about 1 mile before the Port Royal exit, are restricted to a single lane in each direction and have contributed to significant backups on Penn State football weekends, according to PennDOT.
Message boards along Route 22/322 will display travel times to Beaver Stadium so drivers can decide whether to use alternate routes.
Drivers are also encouraged to check PennDOT’s 511pa.com for up-to-date travel conditions.
In State College, meanwhile, the ongoing Atherton Street project should pose less of an issue than it did for Penn State’s last home game two weeks ago.
Long-term traffic controls remain in place, but lane restrictions in the area of the West Beaver Avenue and South Atherton Street that caused significant congestion earlier this month have since been lifted.
Contractors for the multi-year project are not working on Friday or Saturday to minimize impact on traffic headed to the game.
No. 7 Penn State hosts No. 24 Iowa at 7:30 p.m. Saturday in Beaver Stadium.
