The Pennsylvania Farm Show awarded scholarships to 18 Penn State student’s at its 100th annual expo in Harrisburg.
The farm show gives out scholarships each year at the event, and Nittany Lions took home 18 of the 28 scholarships awarded, according to Penn State News.
Post-secondary education students who have exhibited at the show are eligible for the scholarship, which is given to individuals who show leadership qualities and excel academically.
The College of Agricultural Sciences has been awarding additional money to students who receive scholarships since 2005. Out of the 18 Penn Staters who received the scholarship, 15 are enrolled in the college, which added an additional $2,000 on top of the $3,500 scholarship from the Farm Show.
‘Exhibiting at the Farm Show requires a strong sense of responsibility and a willingness to work hard, which are traits that all of these students have demonstrated,’ said Tracy Hoover, the College of Agricultural Sciences’ associate dean for undergraduate education. ‘The college is proud to join the Farm Show Scholarship Foundation in supporting the academic pursuits of these future agricultural leaders.’
The Farm Show Scholarship Foundation has awarded $1.3 million to students since it was founded 23 years ago.
This year’s expo was a special one, as the Harrisburg agricultural event hit the century mark and turned 100 years old. It held a birthday celebration of sorts in conjunction with the Berkey Creamery, which celebrated its 150th birthday throughout 2015 — with the festivities trickling into 2016 for January’s Farm Show.
