Initial report, posted @ 3:56 p.m. Sunday:

Dramatic thunderstorms Sunday afternoon brought flash flooding, hail, power outages and a variety of property and tree damage to the State College area.

Shortly before 3 p.m., a resident in the College Heights area reported that nearly three inches of rain had just fallen in a roughly 20-minute period.

Across the region, StateCollege.com readers said rainwater briefly overwhelmed roadways and swamped basements. Some noted severe damage to trees.

And in downtown State College, a chunk of west-facing facade at the Calder Commons apartment building, near Hetzel Street, had fallen off — apparently due to the storms. Some building materials there collapsed into a parking area. (See local weather-related photos in the gallery to the right; click on the large image to launch the gallery.)

More than 3,000 West Penn Power customers in Centre County have suffered power outages as a result of the storms. Shortly before 4 p.m., the utility company noted that nearly 4,000 customers in the county were still without power — many of them in the State College area.

West Penn expects to restore power to all customers in the county before 6 p.m., according to its website.

At one point earlier today, a tornado warning was issued for eastern reaches of Centre County — not including State College proper.

A severe thunderstorm watch, issued by the National Weather Service, is scheduled to remain in effect through 9 p.m. for the whole county.

StateCollege.com will post additional information as it becomes available. More local photos illustrating the weather’s impact will be posted later today.
