Police are investigating a case of grand theft auto that occurred on Monday.
Police received a call about a stolen car at about 1:00 on Monday afternoon. The owner reported he had parked his 1997 black Jeep Wrangler on the 400 block of Peach Alley as he carried personal effects up to a nearby apartment on Beaver Avenue.
The owner had reportedly left the Jeep running, and returned to find it stolen.
State police found the vehicle in Lewistown several hours later. Police say it had been abandoned in a parking lot after it apparently ran out of gas, which may suggest the vehicle had been taken for a joyride.
The incident is relatively rare for State College, as police say the vast majority of calls for stolen vehicles reveal that a vehicle was either towed or parked in a different place than the owner recalled.
The investigation is ongoing, and police ask anyone with information to call 814-234-1750 or submit an anonymous tip online.
